This was just before Gordon moved to the USA. A sentimental trip to the Lakes for him, but also a good week with friends. We stayed in a small flat in Keswick. Two of us had to share a bed (I cannot remember which two, but we were in sleeping bags). I cannot remember which car we used either. It could have been a Cirrus company car in which case it was likely to be a Golf (Chris) or and Escort (Gordon).
Phil Broughton and Lockway (i.e. the London group from the Easter Scotland trips; named that because they share a canal boat) were also there at some point and we met them for a walk which I am sure was the Fairfield Horseshoe.
My guesses at the locations of pictures are exactly that – guesses. In some cases I am very certain because of consulting my ancient copies of Wainwright’s Guides and my not-quite-so-ancient OS maps.
From the photos it looks as though we climbed Helvellyn using Striding edge. I see pictures of the tarn and nearby summits.
Did we visit Blencathra on this trip I wonder? It looks as though we might have done.
On another day we took a trip on the gondola at Coniston. I bought a print of a picture of this boat which still hangs on our wall. It was still operating in 2009 by the way and looked great. Betsy and I joined Steve and Gail Vickers for a trip to Ruskin’s home on it that year. An excellent boat ride.
Bob somewhereOne of many that I cannot identifyHelvellyn, Striding Edge on the left, Swirral edge on the right and Red Tarn in the middleProbably looking towards Swirral Edge and Catstycam. The path to Glenridding across the valley is in exactly the right place. I have no idea who the person is.Contemplating Striding EdgeThis monument is a famous, but not often noticed, landmark on Helvellyn. Called the Dixon Memorial. It commemorates Robert Dixon who fell to his death from Striding Edge in 1858 while following the Patterdale foxhounds. There are several other monuments up there including one to a person that landed an aircraft on Helvellyn summit in 1926. He was a test pilot called Bert Hinkler and the plane was an Avro 585 from the Woodford factory in CheshireI think this is looking back toward Ullswater.Probably the Helvellyn summit plateauGordon; not sure which direction, but that well-worn path in the background should give us a clueNot sure where this is. I wonder if its the view towards Ambleside and WindermereMaybe Coniston with the “Old Man” in the backgroundI bet Bassenthwiate is the Lake on the left and Derwentwater is the lake on the right, Skiddaw in the background. Or maybe not! Taken from the Catbells area possibly. Newlands round hike perhaps.Bob somewhere off the path on a damp day. Fairfield I thinkMaybe Grisedale. or maybe the other direction, or maybe somewhere completely different!A summit, but where? That cairn should give it awayNot certain. No idea. I should, but I have a suspicion that it’s toward the ScafellsMaybe the Newlands Round hikeMaybe Coniston areaI wonder if this is the start of the Fairfield hikePhil on Fairfield or another summit on the Horseshoe I think. My red Karrimor rucksack is lying on the ground. Late news; Heather thinks that this is on Heron Pike.My guess is Grisedale Tarn. Another option is Scales Tarn on BlencathraSomewhere on the Horseshoe. Maybe Hart Crag in the backgroundLooks like a boggy ascent I have seen worse summit cairns than tis is Scotland. It has probabkt been tidied up by now. Still it could be a good use for old fence posts.A big cairn indeed. Makes Chris look small. Perhaps this is the same as the other one and should be a good identifier.Grisedale Tarn again maybe? Could be Scales Tarn too.I think that this might be Blencathra (Sharp Edge), because of the flat area behind, but maybe notChris strutting along confidentlyMaybe on the Fairfield day. I don’t know who those people are.I have a feeling that this is a picture from another trip. That looks like John Anderson on the right.Nice viewI wonder if this was at the start of the Helvellyn dayOne of those superb Lake District views. Bob’s rucksack was red and blue, mine was all red.I guess it rained occasionally. Pretty sure that this is looking west towards the Scafells
